The Matrix and Plato's Allegory of the Cave

After some thoughts, I do found some interesting similarities of relationship between the movie Matrix and the Plato's Allegory of the Cave but some question about their theory. Primary, I would like to say that at the beginning of the story, both of them do have initiation which is humans are prisoners that being blindfolded by their jailer or at least a culprit that make them only observe and see whats in front of their eyes only. At this point, it does make me question, why don't they think? Will they ever questioned themselves about their surroundings? For instance, why they only can see things in front of their eyes or even question who makes them to expose the situation they have right now? However, after that I think that it might be just some imperfection out of something, just like everything in our world, majority of us are too afraid of thinking something that is not logical and make sense to us, that is how we think in this world now. Secondly , after the ONE has realized what was actually happened surround him and comprehended the reality, he started to see and experienced the outside world and eventually the choice has arrived which make him to choose to stay remain to his unreal world or take risk and think out-of-box to explore the new world. Similarly, the movie Matrix, we can find that Neo, the One, after swallowed the "red pill" and he started to realize the reality, he was in dilemma to accept the truth after he realized what the real Matrix was and eventually he chose to accept the real world and embrace the truth. Lastly, the one who choose to embrace the real world would have decision to make whether to go back to the fake world to help the rest or refused to do so. Same thing as the movie Matrix, Neo chose the salvation and save the rest of the mankind to free from the bondage of machines and the fake world they lived in.

The Matrix and The Plato's Allegory of The Cave

In my opinion, the movie Matrix does have some similarities that fit to the criteria of the Plato's Allegory of The Cave. First of all, in Allegory of the Cave, Plato described that humans as prisoners were chained and only able to see things towards their eyes (referred to the shadows behind the fire) . In other words, they only can see things that are made believes and unable to explore the surrounding because of the immobility (the chain). In movie Matrix, humans are being captured in a stimulation world by machines which is made believed as their real world or reality (the shadows behind the fire). They were unable to notice and see the surrounding because they were born to believe their "fake" world is reality since their birth (the chain). After that, in Allegory of the Cave, one day, one of the prisoner was escaped and able to notice the surrounding him and started to see the light and eventually he realized that the world that he used to adapt was not the reality. Similarly, Neo, the main character of the movie Matrix, was able to awake and realize that he was taken into custody by the Matrix and he started to see the reality or the truth. Finally, according to the Allegory of the Cave , the escaped prisoner had their choice to choose whether come back and rescue the rest of the prisoner or remain staying inside or outside if they got out  because they scared they will fail their new life outside or shunned by other prisoners inside. Approximately,  in movie Matrix, Neo was having the hard time and struggled to accept the reality and the real motive of the existence of Matrix. However, he accepted it and made his decision to come back for rescue the rest of the prisoners in Matrix.

What is Borobudur?
Borobudur is the biggest buddhist temple in the ninth century in Magelang, Central Java, IndonesiaThis Buddhist temple has 1460 relief panels and 504 Buddha effigies in its complex. Millions of people are eager to visit this building as one of the World Wonder Heritages. It is not surprising since architecturally and functionally, as the place for Buddhists to say their prayer, Borobudur is attractive.

Approximately 55,000 cubic metres (72,000 cu yd) of andesite stones were taken from neighbouring stone quarries to build the monument. The stone was cut to size, transported to the site and laid without mortar. Knobs, indentations and dovetails were used to form joints between stones. Reliefs were created in situ after the building had been completed.
The monument is equipped with a good drainage system to cater for the area's high storm water run-off. To prevent flooding, 100 spouts are installed at each corner, each with a unique carvedgargoyle in the shape of a giant or makara.

This monument is both a shrine to the Lord Buddha and a place for Buddhist pilgrimage. The ten levels of the temple symbolize the three divisions of the religion’s cosmic system. As visitors begin their journey at the base of the temple, they make their way to the top of the monument through the three levels of Budhist cosmology, Kāmadhātu (the world of desire), Rupadhatu (the world of forms) and Arupadhatu (the world of formlessness). As visitors walk to the top the monument guides the pilgrims past 1,460 narrative relief panels on the wall and the balustrades.

The Allegory of the Cave also known as the Analogy of the CavePlato's Cave, or the Parable of the Cave.Plato lets Socrates describe a group of people who have lived chained to the wall of a cave all of their lives, facing a blank wall. The people watch shadows projected on the wall by things passing in front of a fire behind them, and begin to ascribe forms to these shadows. According to Plato's Socrates, the shadows are as close as the prisoners get to viewing reality.

The Matrix is a 1999 American science fiction film written and directed by Larry and Andy Wachowski. The film stars Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Joe Pantoliano, Hugo Weaving and was first released in the United States on March 31, 1999. The success of the film led to the release of two feature film sequels, and the Matrix franchise was further expanded through the production of comic books, video games, and animated short films. The film depicts a future in which reality as perceived by most humans is actually a simulated reality created by sentient machines to pacify and subdue the human population, while their bodies' heat and electrical activity are used as an energy source. Upon learning this, computer programmer "Neo" is drawn into a rebellion against the machines, involving other people who have been freed from the "dream world" and into reality.

Base on the video shown by Pro. Ray is related the theories above
The video that shown by Pro.Ray is a boy play computer and asking the computer a question, And the computer answer his question with the answer there is some fiction in your truth, and some truth in your fiction . After that, when he think that he fall from the sky is a dream, this accident is happen in his reality.
This video that shown by Pro.Ray because this is video is have the effect that confusing our mind, and make us continue imagine something that unreal or real. This can show that sometime we can think from different angle, not only always think everything in a same angle, maybe we will get a different answer.

Plato's Allegory of the Cave

This Theory is testing that how human‘s natural instincts are.In the cave, Plate likes people untutored in the Theory of Forms to prisoners chained in a cave, in such a way that they can only look into the shadows appearing on the cave wall and unable to turn their heads. Behind them burns a fire, between the fire and the prisoners there is a parapet that along which puppeteers can walk through. So, when puppeteers hold up those puppets that cast shadows on the wall of the cave, the prisoners are cannot know that which is real or fake because they see and hear are shadows and echoes cast by objects that they do not see only. They also didn't realize that they have three dimensional bodies.

The Matrix
It showed that a lot people always cannot difference which is true or fake when sleeping. Some times, people will think that he/she is go into another world or dream a future. After they awake, they will confuse that is a dream or is a true. Most of time, those things or dreams always happen if they still remember what happen when they are awake.

The Animatrix that had shown by lecturer is related the theories of above.
It starting with a kids is falling down from sky to floor in a school. He awake and talk to unknown, someone is replied "There is some fiction in your truth, and some truth in your fiction". Whole anime process is shown dreamt a things, character still remember of it. He sensitive and scare to anything in his world, because of those agents, he has go to rooftop of school and he realize that scene is same with his dream. What he had dreamt is happened in his life in the end. I found that this animatrix's messenges
is related to Plato's Allegory of the cave, it make people confusing to their mind and continuing their own imagining. Here telling us that think out of the box and use different angle to see through everythings.

What is the Matrix? In Mathematics, matrix is a table of data that contains information. In The Matrix film, the same concept is used to refer to the computer system that creates virtual reality based on the information that incorporate together with formulas and programming codes. For each cell, different factors such as the level of feeling and physical laws are incorporated into a virtual reality- which is then called as the Matrix.

In relation to the monomyth, Neo, the hero, who's eager to learn about the cryptic reference of the word "matrix" appeared on his computer, received a call to an adventure through the meeting with Trinity who informs him about Morpheus, the key answer to his problem. With the help of Trinity and a few companions, Neo escapes from the arrestment by Agent Smith and the other two sinister Agents, who attempt to prevent his collaboration with Morpheus.

During the meet up, Morpheus offers Neo two different pills- one to be back to the comfort zone he has been living all his life, another one is to be unplugged from the Matrix into the real world. Out of curiosity, Neo decides to be unplugged and takes the red pill- the answer to the matrix. It marks the acceptance of the call into the adventure and crossing the first threshold from his familiar world (his home) to the unfamiliar territory (the real world).

Neo wakes up abruptly and finds himself in a vessel filled with fluid, connecting with thousands of other people in an electrical structure, which is used to generate bio-electrical power. Upon his awakening, Neo is then rescued by Morpheus and brought to a ship- Nebuchadnezzar. He is then told about the real world and the simulated world (the matrix), and that he is prophesied as "The One" who will eventually end the war between humans and the Machines. It is where Neo is at the stage of 'Belly of The Whale', where he finds himself in a whole new world filled with darkness after getting to know that he has been living in an delusional world (matrix) since his birth. It also is the time when he accepts his fate and finds a purpose to move on by becoming a free man and to fight against the Machines.

Upon Initiation, during the Road of Trials, Neo goes through a lot of simulation tests in order to prepare himself in fighting against the Machines. Morpheus also challenges him in developing his understanding of the matrix world for better control of it. After going through several failures, he finally succeeds in the simulation tests and is able to take a better control of the simulation world.

In Meeting with Goddess stage, the group enters the Matrix to visit the Oracle, who predicted about the emergence of the One. However, Oracle tells Neo that he's not The One and that he has to choose between his life and that of Morpheus soon.

Unfortunately, during the visit to the Matrix, the group is chased after by the Agents and Morpheus is caught to let Neo and his crew escape. Their ally, Cypher betrayed them and killed some of the crew members, in exchange of permanent return to the comfortable life in the Matrix. Later on, Neo and Trinity return to the Matrix to rescue Morpheus. Neo becomes more confident in manipulating the matrix to the point of dodging bullets fired at him. When they are about to leave to the real world, Neo is defeated and killed by Agent Smith. In the real world, Trinity kisses Neo and restores his life. It is where he encounters Atonement with the Father, where he is saved by the power of love from Trinity.

Neo revives with the power to control the Matrix and equipped with divine knowledge, love and compassion, which marks the Apotheosis stage. With the special power, Neo is able to destroy Agent Smith and return to the ships to destroy the attacking sentinels. The Ultimate Boon is achieved following the revival of Neo as The One.

In the stage of Return, the film ends with Neo going back to the Matrix and making a phone call demonstrating the imprisoned people that "anything is possible". He hangs up the phone and flies to the sky, indicating that he becomes a Master of Two Worlds and achieves a balance between the spiritual and the material. Now, his mastery leads to the freedom from the fear of death and in return, the freedom to live. It correlates to the theories of Descartes, which he promoted thinking. He said as long as we think, we are alive, despite of the environment being a hallucination; unlike the animals which he considered as mechanical beings, because they can't think but usually react the same based on rules and situation like programming languages.

Based on Plato's Allergory of the Cavewhat we see may not be the whole truth or even can be a whole lie. For that reason, we should doubt everything we see as it may not be real. It can be reinforced by experience and other factors like habits and chemical dependency but those factors may not prove that what we see is true. In the film, people live in the virtual reality (matrix) without knowing about the real world existence. They are so hopelessly dependent on the existing laws and system that they will fight to protect it. They are afraid and refuse changes because they believe in what they see as 'real'.

The same concept applies in Art too. It can not be seen at first sight and we have to look at it deeper to interpret its meaning behind. At one point we may interpret it like that, but after some time, we may interpret it differently and it may differ from the artist's original intention. It is so we can get it more boldly after we find out our mistakes and it's to let the individuals to be independent and go along with their desires, more to the point of facilitating them to the path they want, rather than controlling their minds at what they see as something fixed.

My favorite scene of the movie Gladiator will be the last part of the battle scene. The fight between Maximus and Commodus. Although Maximus was being stabbed by Commodus before the fight, he doesn't give up and continue his fight, yet he gave all his best to fight Commodus, in the end he won, although he died, but Maximus's hero story will be remembered by all of us. The spirit of brave and strong love for his family is respectful, I salute and admire that kind of loyalty towards the country.

This scene is talking about Maximus is fighting with Tigris of Gaul and tigers. I found that the match was unfair for Maximus, because Emperor Commodus  sent three tigers to attack him and kill him as a result of hatred. Tigris was stabbed in the foot by Maximus, blooded after an encounter and slaying with a tiger. Leaning down, blood came from his Mask's mouth and he collapsed to the ground. The audience wanted Maximus to kill the "undefeated" defeated Gladiator, but Maximus kindness spared the Gladiator. This scene show that Maximus is brave and confident to fight with Tigris of Gaul and 3 tigers. Maximus is kindness that he did not kill the Tigris of Gaul's head however audience want Maximus to kill him and the princess has want Maximus to kill the Tigris of Gaul.

My favorite scene of Gladiator is when Maximus and Commodus was fighting, Commodus produced the hidden stiletto to kill Maximus, but finally he was killed because Maximus plunged the blade deep into his throat. This scene show Maximus's brave and persist to gain his self-respect and his revenge to the murder of his family and his Emperor. From his brave to live along with the suffer of his family and emperor's death and finally won Commodus in the gladiatorial arena, he is a hero that deserved people's admire and respect.

Favorite scene from movie "Gladiator" By NCG

Extract from movie "Gladiator", 2000
"Maximus The Merciful"

My favorite scene is the scene where he is declared "Maximus the Merciful" by the crowed. The reason that I choose this scene is because regardless from increasing popularity and further frustration of Commodus from that scene, I find that this moment is where he showed compassion and  forgiveness as a leader, as well as a survivor. It was noble and mercy where he willing to put down his self-pride, lower himself as a normal human being and finally spare his enemy. Such quality should be reflected to everyone in our world nowadays which is very rare to find.

Favorite scene from movie "Gladiator" By TWT

Extracted from movie "Gladiator" at 2000.
Famous quote: "My name is Maximus Decimus Meridus, commander of the armies of the North; general of Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife and I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next."

In my opinion, my favorite scene from movie "Gladiator" 2000 will be the scene where he forced to review the truth identity of himself and he pledged to seek vengeance for his dead wife and dead son. I like this particular scene the most because it showed the best two quality of him which were fearless and loyalty during his conversation when he reviewed himself. His bravery and loyalty had touched the crowd and voted to spare his life. It was the most amazing and touching moment of mine personal opinion throughout the whole movie.

My favorite scene of Gladiator would be half-way through the movie when Maximus united the group in a defensive force in order to fight the highly outnumbered Carthaginians who had horses and carriages. Maximus and his group won the battle and the crowd's applause. I like this scene because it shows that the unity of people will lead them to achieve success. One can never stand alone to fight against the huge force. It takes courages, trust and unity to defeat the enemy, especially when the enemy is in a better condition either in size, power or the number. It is difficult to defeat the enemy in such condition, however, with the courage from Maximus to stay and fight together, the men managed to win the battle.

I have chosen this scene to be the scene I love the most because this scene is when the General Maximus Decimus Meridius fought and won the tournament with other gladiators. He success to gather all gladiators and had teamwork together for protecting themselves during the tournament in the Arena. They won from being killed in the tournament, and as you can see General Maximus is putting his hand up high to show victory. Since then, he is declared "Maximus the Merciful" by the crowd, increasing his popularity and further frustrating Commodus, who cannot kill Maximus without making him a martyr.

In Gladiator, victorious general Maximus Decimus Meridias has been named keeper of Rome and its empire by dying emperor Marcus Aurelius, so that rule might pass from the Caesars back to the people and Senate. Marcus' neglected and power-hungry son, Commodus, has other ideas, however. Escaping an ordered execution, Maximus hurries back to his home in Spain, too late to save his wife and son from the same order. Taken into slavery and trained as a gladiator by Proximo, Maximus lives only that he might someday take his revenge and fulfill the dying wish of his emperor. The time soon comes when Proximo's troupe is called to Rome to participate in a marathon of gladiator games held at the behest of the new emperor, Commodus. Once in Rome, Maximus wastes no time in making his presence known, and is soon involved in a plot to overthrow the emperor with his former-love Lucilla, Commodus' sister, after whom he lusts, and also the widowed mother of Lucius, heir to the empire after his uncle, and democratic-minded senator, Gracchus. In this movie, I like this scene is because the main character was showing his brave when fighting with his opponent. Besides that, Russel Crowe has describe this gladiator character successfully, and it also show that how a gladiator versus their opponent with a bad condition.
